Peugeot show in Paris, the new "air" hybrid

Peugeot company will present at the October Paris Motor Show in concept version of the hatchback 208, equipped with a hybrid power plant, capable of operating on compressed air. The prototype, called Hybrid Air, is the answer to the problem of the French government to build cars at a rate of no more than two liters of fuel per hundred kilometers.

Peugeot engineers have replaced most of the steel elements in the design of the hatchback, including the floor panel and the tailgate on composite and aluminum. As a result, the curb weight of the car, built on the basis of the standard Peugeot 208 with the 1.2 engine, dropped from 960 to 860 pounds.

In addition, the hatchback has received additional aerodynamic elements, optimizing airflow and tires with reduced rolling resistance. Rear-view mirrors have been replaced by cameras.

The structure of the power plant entered upgraded gasoline engine 1.2, which became four percent more economical compressed air tank located under the boot floor, hydraulic pumps and a special transmission with planetary gearing.

The first such power plant was introduced at the beginning of last year. Then she appeared on the conceptual embodiment Peugeot 2008, which was built in the form of a working prototype and spend about 2.7 liters of fuel per hundred kilometers. Manufacturer expects that the cars will be able to pass without the use of the internal combustion engine, only in the air, up to 70 kilometers.

It is assumed that the first "air" hybrids will be ready for mass production in 2016.
