Volkswagen is already working on a new Golf

Although the current, seventh generation Volkswagen Golf is still very fresh, German engineers are already working on the eighth generation of the popular model, which will be released only after five years.

So early preparation is related to the need to fit into the strict environmental standards that will take effect in the EU from 2020. Although the total European sales share of economy the Golf and Polo significantly higher than that of the larger and more voracious models, Volkswagen will still have to reduce the average in the lineup CO2 emissions by about 22-27%.

According to the British edition Autocar referring to insiders in VW Group, in the development of the next Golf will use the experience of creating super economic hybrid coupe XL1. However, to reduce harmful emissions by aerodynamic tweaks, developers will have to work hard, because the best-selling model is necessary to keep a recognizable body and stay within budget.

There are a number of innovative technologies that can be used in the eighth Golf. Among them - the hybrid system with a flywheel. Such a system already exists in Volvo: it's called Flybrid® KERS. Kinetic braking energy transmitted to the rear axle is mounted on the flywheel, spinning it, and when resuming traffic is passed back to the wheels through a special transmission.

It also discusses options for using engines with variable compression ratio, electric superchargers e-turbo system and fuel economy due to inertial motion, which involves temporarily disabling the engine.
